Train for Decades, Not Just This Season
Picture yourself at 80, standing at the top of a run you've skied for forty years. Same lift, same line, same grin, and your own legs under you.
Most gyms are built to make you better at lifting weights. We're built to keep you out on the mountain. At Minerstown, we train people to keep skiing, riding, hiking, and climbing for as many decades as they can. Our method is the 100 Year Athlete program, developed by Minerstown owner Ben Van Treese. Here's how it works.
WHAT WE BELIEVE...
The gym serves the mountain.
Your bench press isn't the point. We care about the skiing, riding, and hiking the training makes possible.
Build to last.
Sweat and soreness are poor ways to measure a workout, and going hard every day is a good way to get hurt. We balance training and recovery so you can keep going.
Every exercise has a reason.
We build programs from research and years of coaching mountain athletes, and your coach tells you why you're doing each thing.
Keep a big trip on the calendar.
A race, a hut trip, a peak you've been eyeing. People train better when they're training for something.

How The Training Works.
Every program we write draws on nine physical qualities: joint mobility, speed, power, strength, muscle, muscular endurance, short hard efforts, aerobic fitness, and long easy efforts. Nobody can train all nine at once, so we change the mix with the seasons.
Mobility gets attention all year, because joints that move well are where everything else starts. Strength and power get the most emphasis, because skiing and riding don't train them for you. We build muscle in the off-season, when there's time to recover, and we fill in conditioning during the spring and fall, when there are fewer ways to train outside.
We skip what your sport already gives you. Lifting light weights for 25 reps on top of a week of riding mostly leaves you tired.
What your first few months look like
Two personal training sessions for $99. You and a coach go over your goals, injuries, and training history, and look at how you move.
A 12-week plan built around you. The early weeks focus on joint health and a solid base, so your body is ready for harder training.
Coaching, one-on-one or in a small group. Your coach watches your form and changes the program when something flares up. Two or three sessions a week is enough, and it leaves plenty in the tank for the trail.
A review and a next step. At the end of the 12 weeks, we look at your progress and recommend what makes sense next.
